In our family I'm the designated field trip parent. For the most part I don't mind, the circus was a boatload of fun and I probably had a better time than BabyRat. Today's trip to the zoo was a bit more hectic than I had expected.
First of all, it looked like half the elementary schools in Metro DC were there today. BabyRat and I usually make it to the zoo 3-4 times a year and I've never seen it close to being as crowded as it was today. It was fucking bedlam!!
There was also no real plan on the part of the teachers, but BabyRat and I ended up hanging with a pretty cool Dad and his kid for most of the trip. Everyone made it back in one piece.

Ludlow-Taylor PTA Meeting
So I've been trying to navigate the maze of DCPS to try and figure out where BabyRat is going to go to school when the time comes. So far I've been to Peabody and Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School (LTES) in an attempt to plot a course of action.
At this point we've more or less settled on Ludlow-Taylor, mostly because it's our in-boundary school and as a result we're trying to get involved with the school so I went to the PTA meeting last night.
There were a couple of other families there that I recognized from Stanton Park and the community meeting that we attended back in March at LTES as well as Mr. Weaver (the PTA President), Dr. Presswood (outgoing Principal), Dr. Govan (from DCPS Cluster 3), and several teachers for a total of about 15 people.
Here's where it starts to get interesting. I had received information that new members would be able to join at the beginning of the meeting, but when I arrived there was no one there to accept new members. Before too long someone showed up to collect money and so forth and we were able to join the PTA, but those of us without children were only able to join as members of the "Presidential Unit." Meaning that those of us without children in the school may, " . . . attend general PTA meetings, donate funds, help organize fundraising events, and volunteer your time; however, you may neither vote nor serve in official PTA positions such as committee chairpersons or Executive Board Members."
From what I was able to gather, this "Presidential Unit" thing was a change to the by-laws that was made at the last PTA meeting. A few new families signed up for the PTA and when I realized that all I had were Yuppie Food Coupons, one of the other Dads there just gave me $10 to join and said I could get him back later.
Finally the meeting started with the usual passing out of an agenda and officer's reports. The Treasurer made a point of saying that Presidential Unit membership dues are not a part of the general PTA fund, which led to some questions about exactly how that money would be used. There was a couple of minutes of back and forth and everyone seemed to be satisfied the result.
There was also some discussion about a Summer Program too. At the LTES Community there was a guy there who was pretty vocal in his distrust of Friends of Ludlow-Taylor. Let's call him "Vocal Parent" or VP for short. Having only seen VP once, I wasn't sure quite what his deal was but I found out last night. VP just seems to have a confrontational personality; he laid into someone who was merely reporting news that he didn't like. It definitely puts VP's performance at the community meeting into a different, less raced based, perspective. Although I have to say, every time I've been at a meeting at LTES VP has been there and that's not something I can say about a lot of the parents at that school. I think in the months and years to come VP will prove to be a powerful ally and/or opponent at various times.
Next up was Dr. Govan from DCPS Cluster 3. Dr. Govan was explaining the process for hiring the new principal of DCPS. There seems to be a lot of layers of bureaucracy in the search and hiring process, but that hardly comes as a surprise. There's a Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT) that places its chairperson on the search committee and then there are various groups of stakeholders who are represented as well. When Dr. Govan was giving more details on how questions are submitted and asked to the candidates, VP jumped into the mix. VP started grilling about whether or not the candidates knew the questions beforehand and generally was all over Dr. Govan about the whole process.
The process for selecting a new principal seems very HR driven; like the whole deal is set up solely to make sure the school system doesn't get sued and not to select the best candidates. One other interesting little tidbit is that the Chancellor is not obligated to select one of the candidates the search committee recommends. When asked about this Dr. Govan said, "When it gets to the Chancellor, anything can happen."

Sticky Rice Finally Opening!!!
Woo-hoo!! How long ago did they paint the facade of Sticky Rice; had to have been at least a year ago, right? Regardless, I have been slobbering over the idea of sushi restaurant just a short walk away from the Rat's Nest since I first heard about the place. My anticipation was heightened when The Skip, who used to live in Richmond (home of the original Sticky Rice), told me about how insanely good the food was at the original.
Last night I was checking on the insanity over at DCist and they linked to the Frozen Tropics post announcing Sticky Rice's soft opening this weekend. Judging by the number and content of the comments, I'm not the only person who has been awaiting this opening with bated breath.
I know that things can get a little rough during a soft opening, but I wasn't able to resist the urge to make a reservation for the 5pm seating on Saturday. I'll tell y'all more when I know more.
[updated]
OK, I know more now. According to Daily Candy if you order food from Sticky Rice 30 days in a row, they will name a roll after you. I'm taking this as a challenge! Look for the "Rat Roll" in about 35 days.
Also, there is a Sticky Rice fan site.

R & R Hotel
Show was supposed to start @ 8:30, so Dr Mayhem and I rushed out of the house (after downing a glass of absinthe) so we wouldn't be too late. Got here and everything is running late; I'm more surprised than annoyed because the last half dozen or so shows(@ RnR and other venues) that I've been to have gone off on time.
Stinking Lizaveta
A Day Without a Murder, Zeitgeist the Movie, Truth Movement, Vicious Circle, (missed one), and LBJ.
They didn't start calling out the songs until a few songs in, I would love to know what the song was right before 'Murder'; please leave a message.
Also, shocked and grossed to pay $9.50 for a PBR and a shot Jim Beam; that shit is $3 @ Bob & Barbara's.
Torche
Someone has jokes because Dokken was being played between bands.
Torche was louder than the Big Bang. I think they started with 'Little Champion', that was all I could make out. Seriously, their shit was turned up to 11; I'm sitting here with my ears ringing an hour and change after their set ended.
The Sword
By the time they took the stage I was pretty tired, we stayed for what I'm guessing was about half their set. They were a'ight, but nothing too special IMHO.

Capitol Hill Harris Teeter Opening Today?
On the Metro to work today I could have sworn that I caught a glimpse of an article that said the "Jenkins Row" (what-the-fuck-ever) Harris Teeter was opening today. A quick search of the Washington Post showed that the store was due to open last night at 5:30pm and the Harris Teeter website says that the store is having its Grand Opening today.
Anyone know if this is the case?

It's open and very nice

My Problem (Pt. 1)
I have a problem, I don't like it when people try to control or manipulate me. I hated it when my parents did it when I was a kid and I really hate it now that I'm an adult and my wife tries to flex. I also have an immense dislike for my wife's immature bullshit that she pulls in moments of anger.
I am a nice, reasonable guy who treats his wife well and listens to her. I feel that if we have a problem then she should sit down and discuss it with me and we can come to some sort of agreement. The agreement may be that WifeRat has to take her complaint and shove it up her ass, but I would have given her beef a fair hearing. Likewise, sometimes the agreement will be that I will eat one of those monstrous shit sandwiches that my wife is so fond of serving up; I won't like it, but that's part of life.
My wife says that it's unacceptable that I get angry and start yelling, I have pumped my brakes and almost never yell any more. So I feel like I don't care how mad she is, if I'm not allowed to punch walls, throw shit around, and say crazy shit; I think it's only fair that she has to control herself the same way I do. Naturally, my wife doesn't see it that way; she still gets pissed and starts swearing a blue streak in front of BabyRat at the drop of a hat and refuses to stop. I would like to include her annoying penchant for indulging in hysterical sobbing during arguments too, but that's never going to happen so I had to let that one go.

New Harris Teeter
WifeRat was bitter following late night escapades after rugby this week so I decided to check out the new Harris Teeter on Kalorama. I didn't get there until almost 2200hrs so the parking garage was pretty much deserted, but I was still greeted by cheerful employee when I walked into the elevator lobby.
As expected, the store was clean and well-stocked even considering the late hour. I basically walked around the outside edge of the store getting produce, milk, and all the rest of the stuff that keeps Swiss Family Rat well fed. Only one register was open and when I attempted to use the self-checkout a cheerful and (attempting to be) helpful employee directed me to an Express checkout station that was temporarily abandoned. About 90 seconds and a cart full of apologies later, the staff member showed up and whipped me through the checkout process while directing me to a newspaper coupon for $5 off.
Seeing the quantity of stuff I purchased and the short amount of time it took me to get done, one of the guys down in the garage commented that I hit the store, ". . . bank robbery style, quick!"
On the way home I stopped in for a short one with SOS at Ulah. I was curious to check it out again after getting an anonymous comment that the food sucked. I neglected to mention this to SOS 'cause he's just bubbling over talking about the place that he and Girlfriend of Hateration (GOH) are buying. Some random guy also bought me a shot of Patron in the course of trying to make a point to the bartender next door.

Saturday Morning
I took this week off from rugby for a couple of reasons; allergies are killing WifeRat and BabyRat so they weren't going to come this week, I blew off Thursday practice to go to the Nats game, a friend of mine from high school is coming for dinner tonight, and I also had the Ward 6 Education Forum this morning. The wife has been awesome about letting me play as much rugby as I wanted to this Spring, so I try to repay the favor by taking off weeks (like this one) when playing is going to be a hassle for the fam. We could have made it work, but I try not to be dogmatic about my "right" to play rugby.
BabyRat's allergies are really bad this morning and she's super fussy, so we decided to skip the Ward 6 Education Forum and right now we're all sitting on the couch watching the Backyardigans. I would have liked to go, but the forum seemed like it might be little more of a circle jerk than I cared to deal with on a Saturday morning.

Safe @ Home
Got off the Metro at Eastern Market and stopped at Tunnicliff's for a short one and to see SOS. The place was mobbed with folks that had just left either the Nats or Wiz game. After a quick bourbon (God's gift to you and me), I took one of those wonderful late evening strolls across the Hill and enjoyed the beautiful weather.
Life is good.

Of course my cheap ass company didn't pop for any food or drink in the box. I wouldn't mind nearly as much except I got another one of those e-mails talking about how well the company did last quarter on the same day that I got a raise that didn't even cover inflation. So now I'm waiting in an enormous line at Ben's and my beer is already gone.
A helpful cashier just directed me to a shorter line, sweet!

Metro is running slow tonight, but I'm only taking it to the USDA. Bossman has a parking pass for us, so we're driving to the stadium.
Drowning in a Tidal Wave of Pee
BabyRat has been potty-trained for a good long time now; when we first started putting her in underwear we had the inevitable accidents and it was no big deal. We kept her in diapers at night for a while because it was easier, but eventually we let that go too knowing full well that we were going to have some night time accidents. Things were going really well, and for a couple of weeks BabyRat stopped having accidents altogether and I thought we were done with potty training. Unfortunately, like so many other times in my life, I was wrong, Wrong, WRONG!
First the night time accidents came back, so we started taking her to the bathroom about two hours after she went to sleep and that seemed to help. If the problem had remained confined to the night time hours I could have lived with it, but now BabyRat is having day time accidents again.
BR pissed herself twice this morning and I got a slightly frantic and annoyed phone call from her daycare class teacher. So I go downstairs to the daycare center and talk to BR for a little while, she wiggles around and doesn't answer my questions for a little while. I keep on asking questions and getting some nonsense answers, but I plod ahead until BR finally tells me that she's peeing on herself because she "wants attention."
Now I had been telling my wife this for a while and she would get mad at me saying that BR is too young to know what's up, but I knew better. When I finally got WifeRat on the phone I was irked 'cause I had to stop working to go home and get clean clothes and I couldn't get her on the phone when the shit (piss really) was hitting the fan. After relating the entire episode to WR, she finally agreed that BR was peeing her pants to get attention.
WR says that every information source is in agreement that you can't punish kids about any of the bathroom stuff. OK, fine but what the hell are you supposed to do? As far as I can tell we're losing this battle; BR wants attention, so she pees on herself. Then we have to clean her up and put clean clothes on her, so she's getting the attention she wants.
The question is: what now?
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!!

Ulah Bistro
A close friend of HillRat, a guy nicknamed SOS, helped open Ulah Bistro. Things are still in a state of flux at Ulah with an obligatory chef walk out two weeks after the restaurant opened. The recommendation I got from SOS's lady friend was to stick with the pizzas and burgers, but she heard the tuna tartar was good.
I was happy because I hadn't had tartar of any type in a while and it had caught my eye when I looked over the menu. My only minor complaint would be that the salad served on top was a little overdressed, still is was tasty and complimented the tuna nicely. The wasabi cream painted on the plate wasn't just there for decoration, it had a healthy kick and added zing to whatever you dragged through it.
Early looks seem to be pretty neutral so far.

A Few Quick Thoughts - Mostly Whining
1. The camera in the iPhone is laughably bad - No zoom, no lighting adjustment, and no ability to capture movies. The two year old phone that my iPhone replaced had all of that. Jobs, WTF?
2. Brunch at the Ritz-Carlton has really fallen off - My folks like to go there for brunch, what can I say? It wasn't that it was bad today, it was OK; but it wasn't the transcendent experience that an $80/person brunch is supposed to be. For $80 you should be able to get Eggs Benedict.
3. Children are animals - We had the first of three birthday parties for BabyRat on Saturday. Our condo went from crispy fresh to post-apocalyptic in less than an hour; half-eaten mini burgers everywhere, Exxon Valdez sized water & juice spills, and ear splitting noise, but I wouldn't have changed a thing. BabyRat and her friends had a blast and so did I!!

Community Meeting at Ludlow-Taylor (continued)
What Happened
I’m freaked out, I don’t know that I’ve ever been a part of a large-scale meeting or conversation that so accurately reflected our current national debate on race, class, education, and gentrification. All the usual suspects were there: well meaning White liberals who “just want to help”, outraged parents of current students (current stats show that NO children classified as “White” attend LT, take that for what it’s worth), and teachers & administrators caught between the two groups.
After Chancellor Rhee yielded the floor things heated up. A group called ‘Friends of Ludlow-Taylor’ (FoLT) seemed to be getting ready to start leading the meeting but they were interrupted by a parent of a currently enrolled student. He didn’t introduce himself to the crowd, but related an anecdote about getting the run around when he tried to find out more information about FoLT. The Gentleman went on at length, talking about his family’s fifty year roots in the neighborhood, gave a few thoughts on the meaning of gentrification, and finished up by saying, “They’re runnin’ game.”
People then moved into small (8-10 person) facilitated groups. I missed the initial setup while talking to someone, so I didn’t hear the instructions, but I ended up with an agenda and a page with the questions the facilitator was asking on it. The questions weren’t exactly meaningless boilerplate, but they didn’t seem to be much more than a jumping off point for how the people in attendance were going to remake the curriculum and programs of LT. At this point I kind of started wandering around a bit.
I moved over to another table to see how things were going there, the second facilitator seemed to have a slightly better grip on her group. At this second table I got a chance to speak with Dr. Pressler, the current principal of LT. Dr. Pressler struck me as a dedicated and committed educator, he explained to me that some sort of grant proposal had been submitted for him to sign off on that detailed an out of control school. Naturally no principal worth anything would allow themselves to be denigrated like that, so he refused to cooperate.
Judging from what I saw on the posters around the neighborhood, it looks like FoLT expected a new principal to be named at last night’s meeting, but that didn’t appear to be the case. However, WifeRat was still there when Chancellor Rhee was speaking about Dr. Pressler and came away with a different impression.
Analysis
It looks like a group of well intentioned parents got together outside of the regular channels of the school system to discuss how they could improve LT. It also appears that in their enthusiasm to try and raise the level of achievement at LT, these same parents neglected to include the current administration and parents in their plans. Understandably, the parents of the kids that already go to school there are a little pissed about a cabal of people coming in and attempting what could easily be interpreted as a coup.
Another thing that came out while I was talking to various people at last night’s community meeting was the fact that apparently Chancellor Rhee had met with FoLT and cancelled a meeting with the LT PTA. In her defense, Chancellor Rhee promised to correct that oversight (or diss, depends on who you ask) in the immediate future, but it’s a little strange that the Chancellor of DCPS would meet with a group of people whose children don’t attend a DCPS.
The one teacher I spoke to said that she and a couple of other teachers had been denied admittance to FoLT. I don’t know if it was an oversight or an intentional slight, but it strikes me as kind of strange that a group trying to help a school wouldn’t want input from the teachers at the school.
Now I'm finally ready to mention the big ol' elephant in the room: race. Let's be serious shall we? It's obvious that the members of FoLT are working off the standard model of participation (The Peace Corps, Teach for America, VISTA, etc.) for White people who "want to make a difference". Swoop in with the ink just barely dry on their diplomas, do some stuff that doesn't affect the structural/institutional forces that created the conditions they're trying to correct, and then leave feeling good about themselves. All the while completely ignoring the input and experiences of the people they're allegedly there to "help". I'll stop now because I'm enjoying this a little too much.
Don't think I'm going to let Black people off the hook, I'm not. When I asked if PTA meetings were usually this well attended (see the previous post) one of the parents I met during the table discussions clued me in to the fact that PTA meetings usually had less than five attendees. But the very idea that some White people were "trying to take over the school" had the parents of LT's current students crawling over each other to get to this meeting.
Conclusion
I'm not sure what the hell is going on at Ludlow-Taylor, it seems like everyone is mad at everyone who's not in their little clique. The one thing I saw that made me hopeful was that there were a lot of different people representing disparate interests and rather than folks just pitching a fit and storming out or throwing up their hands in frustration that their carefully laid plans had gone astray, people stayed and talked to one and other. Really, that was about all I could have hoped for out of that meeting.

Community Meeting at Ludlow-Taylor
Whoa! I don't quite know where to begin.
About a week ago I was walking home from the park with BabyRat and saw a sign on a light post about this meeting at Ludlow-Taylor tonight. I was interested and excited because my last foray into finding a school for BabyRat didn't go so well.
All three of us (me, wife, and baby) went to the meeting and before we entered the school I noticed the sign outside said "PTA Meeting 5-8". When we got inside (a few minutes late) we were surprised to see DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee speaking before a crowd of 100-150 people. We arrived shortly before the question and answer period started, the floor was opened up, and the fireworks started.
Being a relatively new dad, I hadn't been to a DCPS Community meeting before but somehow I wasn't surprised that the quickly established theme of the meeting was gentrification and its discontents. Rhee did a good job of keeping things under wraps while she was answering questions and not getting too far off track, but after she left things took a turn for the worse.
I'm a little shot out after that meeting, I'll post a more thorough report later.

Apparently People Are Reading This Blog
So after a few pops with the boys down at Hamilton's after practice I stopped into Jimmy Valentine's on the way home. OK, so I had to drive past my crib to get there, but it wasn't like I drove all the way across town or something.
Anyway, after the greetings and whatnot Mark asks if I'm the person who has been posting some of their e-mails. You could have knocked me over with a feather, I had no idea that anyone was actually reading this blog. I'm mostly doing it for my own amusement while I try to "find my voice" as a writer and seeing if I can build an audience and some buzz.
Can I get some love or at least a few comments?
Thanks,
HR

In keeping with my promise to try and keep folks up to date on the goings on surrounding getting BabyRat into some sort of DCPS 3 year-old program, here's a link to Frozen Tropics that has info about some sort of meeting. I actually saw a sign posted about this on my way home from the park today and plan to attend, but if anyone is actually reading this and looking for info I thought this might be helpful. Spring Thaw Information
From: <webmaster@dcrugby.org>
Subject: Spring Thaw Information
Gentlemen,
We have our first matches this weekend and there will be plenty of rugby to go around. Washington Irish have jumped in to fill Warrenton's spot, so we are once again at four teams which means that West Pot will have three matches.
Below is the match schedule and -- as you can imagine -- we are going to have to get going early to get six matches in before dark. That means we will need rookies to plan on getting out to Colmar no later than 7:30 am to help us get the field set up and ready to go. Everyone else should be there by 8:30 at the latest if you intend to be eligible for selections in our first match.
Also, we are having a fund raiser for Men Against Breast Cancer at the drink up, so PLEASE spread the word to friends, families, and coworkers so that we can pack Hamilton's and drink them out of PBR for a good cause. Here is an e-flier that you can send around with info:
http://www.dcrugby.org/events/2008Thaw_social.html
Let me know if you have any questions about Saturday or need additional information.
With you,

At the Barber Shop
My man Darios just opened up his own shop called District Cutters that's located behind the new cigar joint on Florida, I met him when we was cutting at Mason's down on H St. The place is small, only three chairs, but newly finished so it's super comfortable and clean.
I recognize the other barber that was there from Mason's but I don't know his name, it turns out that this other barber, Darios, and the dude waiting with me for a cut are all from Boston. It was interesting to hear these cats old-timing about Boston; talking about the bus routes they used to take and getting chased out of Cambridge by the brothers that lived there. For all the hue and cry about young Black men and how everyone is so afraid of them, the real truth is that they're much more of a danger to each other than they are to everyone else. I say "they" because me and the other bros at the barbershop yesterday are all in our mid to late 30's, we are (for the most part) out of the danger zone; we have been lucky and/or smart enough to make it past the years when an error in judgment was more likely to be fatal or land us in jail.
All the years that I was cutting my own hair I forgot the sense of spiritual renewal that I tend to get from going to the barber shop. I know that sounds kind of corny, but there's really nothing quite like it. Where else can you go where you will find preachers, teachers, thugs, cops, executives, janitors, politicians, construction workers, etc. all existing in perfect harmony? The barber shop is neutral ground, everyone leaves their bullshit at the door and is free to speak their mind. Sometimes that freedom to speak your mind leads people to say some unbelievably stupid things, like the time these guys were speculating that all White people were pre-disposed towards bestiality. I probably should have said something to the contrary, but I was laughing too hard at the ridiculous anecdotes being related to make any kind of strong argument. Still, just listening that day gave me some interesting insight into how whack stereotypes come into being.
There was also a dope ass classic Impala parked outside too, check it out.

iPhone WTF?
So I got an iPhone for Christmas (It's not something I would have ever bought for myself, but I already had Cingular service so it was a pretty cool gift) and I've been pretty happy with it for the most part. But tonight I'm sitting on the couch with the wife about ten minutes ago and my phone starts blowing up; text messages and voice mails from three hours earlier in the night. The wife then told me that she has called more than a few times and couldn't get me on the phone; during the day that makes sense because there are dead spots all over the building I work in, but the rest of the time that shit shouldn't be happening.
I'm more than a little annoyed because the VM was about something fairly important (selling these fucking condos, more on that later) and the text was about something VERY important: an invitation for some rugby team related boozing.
Ya know people like to hate on Microsoft as the epitome of a greedy, evil corporation; but Apple is every bit as bad and maybe worse because they act like they're a bunch of hippies that want to do the right thing, but the reality is they're every bit as bad as M$. Fuckers.
AT&T/Cingular get your shit together, you should be able to handle a slight uptick in messaging traffic on a Friday night.

Conflicted
I just got done watching the Obama video at http://www.dipdive.com/ and I'm conflicted.
There's something so inspiring about this guy that I'm thinking about pushing all my chips into the middle of the table, saying, "Fuck it!", and getting into the mess of American politics. I'm actually contemplating leaving my pretty decent job, working for Obama's campaign, and hoping I can parlay that into a full-time gig on staff somewhere when he wins. I don't believe in every plank in Obama's platform, but there's enough there that I do actually believe in that I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should get involved.
At the same time, there's the pragmatic/cynical side of me that knows that Obama is a politician and that I should protect myself from him and the broken heart that is almost sure to come if I allow myself to feel, to care, and to believe in what he's saying. I mean, I'm just one man; one flawed man; one weak man; one selfish man; one unimportant man. What difference can I possibly make?

SOL at Peabody
So WifeRat and BabyRat ran into Roberta and her brood at a local playground today and apparently we're shit outta luck. Any previously mentioned hook up with regard to getting BabyRat into Peabody appears to be off the table. When I mentioned that we were in boundary for Ludlow-Taylor, Roberta kind of winced and pained look crossed her face. She didn't say anything more specific than she didn't know any parents whose kids went to L-T.
The only other time Ludlow-Taylor had ever been mentioned to me is when some parent (who was a little too impressed with themselves) proclaimed that BabyRat wasn't going to school at L-T less than five minutes after we met. I know that this parent was trying to be helpful and probably thought that their assertiveness was coming off as some sort of ranting comic charm, but it struck me as kind of paternal and bossy. In their defense, this other parent also did have some specific complaints about assaults that happened in the bathroom. When the Wife and I got home we agreed that there were probably no White kids at that school and a quick check of the Post website that breaks down DCPS schools shows that there are no White students at Ludlow-Taylor.
I wonder if BabyRat gets counted as White or Black by DCPS?

DCPS Madness
OK, I've been trying to figure out a hook for this blog and I think I've found one. I'm going to try and blog what I have to do to get BabyRat enrolled in a quality DCPS school. The story could end up being short and boring, we have a neighbor that seems to want to be BFF with WifeRat and she has two little ones just slightly older than ours that are already at Peabody. It looks like we have the inside track on whichever program we prefer at Peabody Elementary, but who knows what's going to happen.
We actually got an e-mail today from Roberta (not her real name) today reminding us about the out of boundary lottery for Peabody. After responding from my iPhone (yes I am one of those obnoxious creeps that loves their iPhone; it was an unsolicited gift that I now can't live without) whilst enjoying a beverage at the Argonaut I came home, cracked open a Sierra Nevada and started conducting some preliminary research on what has to be done.
This shit is way confusing. More soon.

Bono
Bono says. "Both Prime Minister Blair and President Bush knew we were not in support of the war. I've always gone out of my way at U2 shows to show my support for the troops, but it's not something I sound off on. I gave up that right. I have become a single-issue protagonist. And as hard as that is for a mouthy Irishman who's more used to putting his foot in his mouth than his fist, I think people really respect that."

Review: The Black Lips @ The Black Cat
I didn't know anything about the Black Lips past what I read on DCist until I went to the show on Saturday night.
Ian was working the merch table before they went on, when I walked up he immediately introduced himself and started talking about how much he loved the Points and the Selmanaires. Kind of cool that one of the headliners was flacking for the opening acts IMHO.
I also had a chance to rap with Jared before the show. Usually when you see someone rocking those micro OP shorts from 1983 and a John C. Holmes mustache to match, it's some sort of "look at how cool and ironic I am" thing but I didn't get that vibe from Jared at all. I'm not sure what the backstory was, but he played their set with a bass borrowed from the Selmanaires.
Apparently The Points have been having some "Behind the Music" kind of drama over the last couple of weeks, but it didn't show on stage. They played a very tight set, one of their better performances according to Dr. Mayhem. I thought the sound was a little muddy, but that could have been because I was directly in front of the stage or I might just not know what I'm talking about.
I missed most of the Selmanaires set while downstairs eating a falafel, what I heard was interesting but not really my speed.
There were tons of kiddies, I can't remember the last time I saw so many people under 21 at a show. It looked like every one of those kids knew the words to just about every Black Lips song. At one point a particularly enthusiastic youngster with a blond afro was flopping all over one of the monitors at the front of the stage and was in the process of getting ejected by a very skinny bouncer, but Ian intervened and demanded that the kid be allowed to stay.
The Black Lips set was very high energy, but I couldn't really figure out what to make of them for the first half dozen songs. At first it struck me as the same kind of garage/punkabilly played by the Woggles or Thee Crucials, both are great bands that put on a kick ass show, but nothing I hadn't heard before. Then the Black Lips kicked into high gear and made it impossible for me to stand still any longer. Not knowing anything about the band I don't know the name of the song that really got me; it had a kind of Stone Roses feel to it, with like a sitar kind of sounding intro to each verse. Afterwards I turned to Dr. Mayhem and announced, "I'm sold!"
I already burned through my 90 downloads for the month, but the new Black Lips album Good Bad, Not Evil is available on eMusic with an eMusic only bonus track.

My Wife is Driving Me Crazy!!!
Actually the thing that really pisses me off is that she has the nerve to be mad when I tell her how stupid and annoying it is that she's constantly doing this. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?! Not only does she not apologize, but then gives attitude when I try to explain to her that she lives in Washington, DC; security capital of the United States; and it's probably not a smart thing to walk around without ID on her.
What's even more amazing is that half the time she didn't even forget, she actually made a decision to leave the house without her phone, ID, or keys!! This, of course, somehow turns into my problem.
WifeRat and BabyRat go to the park, I have a rare moment alone in the house to have an evening constitutional without BabyRat pounding on the door yelling, "Daddy, what you doing?" Before I can finish, the door buzzer is going off; I ignore it, figuring they're just playing with the buzzer. Buzzer goes off again. DAMN IT! Will I ever take a shit in peace in my own home?!?!?!!? Probably not for a couple of more years.[/rant]

Examiner Stealing DCist Schtick?
Reading the Examiner on the way into work today, I noticed that a bit in the "Yeas & Nays" column (look for: Conservatives take Washington) that looked suspiciously like DCist's Overheard in DC.
Argonaut Closes Early?
I stopped by the Argonaut at a little before midnight and all outside lights were off. There were a couple of people inside, but the door was locked when I pulled on it and I was waved off by the guy behind the bar.
Anyone know what's up?

Below you will see pictures of two men; the one on the left is Mixologist extraordinaire Todd Thrasher of Restaurant Eve and PX, the one on the right is the WWE's "The Miz". Apparently it's not just me that sees the resemblence, no less an authority than Batista (who went to high school with Todd) has also commented on this.

Bushwhacked
This post has nothing to do with Bush43, the bush in question is the one attached to my dome. I've been growing my hair out since about this time last year; I got it touched up once, but no real cutting has gone down in close to a year.
A few weeks ago I got a card from a barber that cuts at a shop called Mason's down on H St, so I decided to see what was shaking down around the way, rather than trekking out to Alexandria to what had been my regular barber shop. I told Darrius (the barber) I'm putting myself in your hands, you're a pro, I trust your judgement. After asking a couple of questions, D busted out the clippers and with no preamble promptly cut off about 2/3 of the hair length that had grown out over the last 10-12 months. It caught me off guard, but after that first cut there was no going back. The cut turned out well enough that I can say with a high degree of certainty I probably won't be going back to see "The Maestro" on Queen St. in Old Town any time soon.

Op-Ed Not Kind to Bush43, et al.
George F. Will - The Leaders We Have - washingtonpost.com
For as bad a job as Bush has done, I would really like for Will to come out with both guns blazing and not let up at all on W & Friends; but I guess his style is more to damn with faint praise as he does here. It seems that Will is very reticent about the fact that Woodward's book will surely be used the Left to pummel the current administration and GOP in the upcoming election; and his rationalization that it's not just this government, but the very nature of government, that is so indelicate, intransigent, and incompetent shows that while providing a sop to his mostly conservative audience at the same time.
